Screws used for HVAC duct applications have gone largely unchanged for many years. Contractors have traditionally chosen between sharp and self-drilling screws for HVAC duct fabrication and installation.  Sharps are ideal for off-angle fastening but are only appropriate for use with light gauge metal.  Self-drilling HVAC screws are suited for heavier gauge duct materials but are prone to “walking” if not held perpendicular. Selecting the Proper Hilti Anchor for Precast Concrete Decks

Here is a picture that we recently took in the field. Another contractor tried to use a standard anchor to attach heavy x-ray imaging equipment overhead to a precast concrete (hollow core or flexacore) deck. The cone shaped hole is a sign that the anchor selected was not appropriate due to the weight of the equipment and the construction methods used to create the concrete deck.  This anchor failure and resulting accident could have, and should have been avoided.  Fortunately, no one was hurt.
